UPDATE: Silversea has the following official statement:

Silver Shadow was involved in a minor incident on Friday morning at around 04:20 GMT as it was approaching the pilot station in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. There was contact between Silver Shadow and a local commercial vessel.

Silver Shadow incurred limited minor dents and guests’ safety was never compromised. The ship is fully operational and continued on its course to Ha Long Bay where all shore tours operated normally. It then continued as scheduled to Hong Kong, where it docked this morning local time. Silversea will carry out a full investigation into the incident.

Something’s not adding up. I guess we’ll have to wait to see pictures from the Silver Shadow to see just how serious it was.

I preface by saying that this may or may not be a pic of the actual incident.
Now that having been said, a 127m long river cruise ship carrying mostly Elderly German pax, collided with a cargo ship carrying corn on the Danube River. No one was hurt, but as you can possibly see in the photo, the cargo ship was badly damaged. The Viktoria, the cruise ship, was able to reach port. AIS is now showing her as underway, so it seems that she was able to go to sea again.

In what seems to be a yearly occurrence, the 5,000 ton Polar Star, operated by Polar Star Expeditions, hit a rock and while not sinking, did have its outer hull breached. The 80-pax vessel hit this rock while attempting to anchor off of Detaille Island in the Antarctic Peninsula. All passengers were safe and accounted for and Chilean rescue workers are evacuating the guests off the ship.

The statement from the line:

“The captain reports there is no apparent oil spill outside the ship, but booms have been deployed as a precaution.”

A latter one states that she is now sailing north along the Antarctic Peninsula enroute to Ushuaia, Argentina.

Quite the story I came home to. The Costa Classica of Costa Cruises collided this morning with a cargo vessel in China. The incident occured in a deep water channel near the Yangtze River. The 1,300 pax ship was traveling from Korea to Shanghai when the cargo vessel broadsided her in the early morning hours.

There are no fatalities but several passengers have been injured, though nothing serious is reported. All passengers disembarked today and future cruises are in jeopardy as Costa already cancelled a voyage set to leave later today.

In the image above, you can clearly see the 60-ft gash in the side of the ship. The area impacted are all cabins on that part of the deck.

100 passengers on the chartered ship, Sergei Kirov, got the scare of a life time when their cruise ship collided with a barge on the Volga River. Fortunately there were no deaths or injuries. 3 crew members suffered very minor injuries while they were rescuing passengers belongings from the flooding cabins, or preventing the ship from sinking. The chartered ship, though, suffered a 5m gash in the ship letting in whater before the crew took action to prevent further disaster.

A spokesman for the local branch of the Emergency Situations Ministry told local news, Interfax:

“The crew listed the ship immediately and began bailing water out and removing property from [flooded] cabins. The water was pumped out, and a patch was improvised from inside.”

The ship was chartered to Europe’s Viking River Cruises. She was sailing with 111 passengers. The incident occurred in the Rybinskoye Reservoir of Russia’s largest river, the Volga. The other ship involved was transporting sand.
