In July we reported about the sinking of a Russian river ship. Well yesterday, fire broke out on the Sergey Abramov. A crew member is still missing as of this post and two people were taken to the hospital. She was still tied up pierside when the blaze happened. The cause is currently being speculated as faulty wiring or negligence.

This demonstrates another dramatic event in the Russian river industry. Local Russian vessels have been plagued with issued. The fleet is very old. Think soviet era. The July sinking brought to light, just how bad of shape these ships are in. If something doesn’t change soon, history may repeat itself soon.

UPDATE:NRK has more photos.

I say explosion in quotes since that’s what is being reported, but I highly doubt that’s what happened. A fire in the engine room killed two crew members and sent nine other crew to the hospital on board the Norwegian Coastal (Hurtigruten) ship Nordlys. The 207 passengers o/b were evacuated as was most of the crew.

The ship was on her way to Aalesund in the southern-ish part of Norway. As you can see in the photo above, the fire yielded plenty of smoke. So much so, the police were forced to close off parts of the Norwegian village. <strike>As of this post, she is still near Aalesund.</strike> She now appears docked in Aalesund.

"We were sent up on deck and given our lifevests. It took only a few minutes after the alarm and we were in the lifeboats," a French passenger said. "It was a well-organized evacuation. The crew did a really good job. Everything went calm and smoothly. There was no panic."

Remember the ship Carnival Splendor. I know you do. In fact the whole world knows of it. It even made it to South Park. The ship is STILL laid up in California after the engine room fire, crippled the ship off of Baja. Well, it just got kicked out of/ sailed from San Francisco.
Initially, she should have been sailing by now, but after initial surveys, it was determined that damage was more severe than initially thought. One of the big projects was the replacement of an entire diesel generator. This involved cutting a hole in the side of the ship in order to slide the old one out and the new one in. The first step is getting it there. In the ship yard when build, they simply rail it from the manufacturer, or sometimes sail it over. In this case, time is of the essence. They FLEW IT IN.
The former Soviet transport aircraft Myria (The Anatov an-225) now works special lift projects including flying cruise ship generators. Coming from someone who works in logistics, flying is the trickiest kind of moves. There is a ton of calculations for stability and MTOW that goes into it, along with mountains of paperwork.
Anyways, Carnival’s Head Cruise Director/Brand ambassador John Heald, post photos on his blog.

Just a month after the Carnival Splendor was incapacitated by an engine room fire, another one has struck an MSC ship. The MSC Musica was scheduled to leave Rio de Janeiro, Brazil yesterday when an engine room fire crippled the ships air conditioning and water purification system. Local Brazilian papers report the following:

A principle of fire in the engine room of the vessel MSC Music, the company’s MSC Cruises, caused confusion in the passenger terminal of the port of Rio in the early evening on Sunday (19).

Passengers are frustrated with the cancellation of cruise

The ship with 3,100 people, would weigh anchor at 18h for an eight-day trip with stopovers in the ports of Recife, Maceió and Salvador, where he returned to Rio

Because of the fire, the vessel was no airconditioning and no water supply, which angered passengers. Nevertheless, shortly after 18:30 the sound system announced the departure of the ship.

Disgusted, a group of about 50 people took the stairs leading to the boat, preventing it to be hoisted. The trip was then canceled.

The Carnival Splendor will now be ready by February 20th, 2011. She will be moved soon from San Diego to San Francisco, where she will be dry-docked.

Gerry Cahill, Carnival’s president and CEO.

“We sincerely apologize to our guests for having to cancel these additional cruises. We made our best effort back in November to estimate the necessary repair time with a strong goal of not having to modify it at a later point in time. Unfortunately, as the repairs have progressed and we have discovered additional issues, it is now clear that we need more time. We know this is extremely disappointing for our guests and particularly disheartening for those who already had their vacations cancelled once and are now being affected again.”
