UPDATE: Carnival Cruise Lines and Port Canaveral have also announced they will also be building a new terminal to accommodate those 12,000 guests every weekend. No details were announced and the deal still needs board approval. So once that occurs we probably should learn more details.
Carnival Cruise Lines has just announced that their 2020 newbuild, rumored to be called Carnival Reflection, will be based in Port Canaveral. This is one of their dual fueled LNG newbuilds. The ship is anticipated to carry 5,286pax at double occupancy. On a typical sailing that figure should be really close to 6,000pax. That’s 12,000 guests on turnaround day for Port Canaveral to handle.
An important aspect of the decision will be the availability of LNG bunkers. The as-yet unbuilt facility will need to either house the LNG tanks or be close to a production facility where they can load the tugs.
The new 180,000gt ship will launch in 2020 and will be Carnival Cruise Lines first in the Excellence-class.
