UPDATE: NPR has more details. Apparently, the vessel was already listing to one side when she left. A sharp turn to the side led to water washing over the side and she was doomed from there. 41 bodies have been recovered by divers and 80 survivors have been accounted for. I’ll post more as its confirmed.
The 55 year old River ship Bulgaria sank this morning on the Volga River. Reports put it around the village of Syukeyevo in the Kansko-Ustinovsky district of the Republic of Tatarstan. There are 173 pax and crew onboard. There are two confirmed dead and 96 unaccounted for as of mid-day Sunday.
The River she was sailing on is a popular summer destination for locals as well as other Europeans. The vessel was owned by what is being described as a local tourism company.
