The Diamond Princess is a Grand-class cruise ship built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan, launched in 2004 for Princess Cruises. Originally intended to be named Sapphire Princess, the ship was renamed during construction after a fire broke out in the shipyard, damaging the hull of the original Diamond Princess. As a result, the vessels’ names were swapped. The Diamond Princess has a gross tonnage of 115,875, a length of 952 feet, and a beam of 123 feet, accommodating 2,670 passengers over 18 decks. Powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system, the ship reaches a top speed of 23 knots
