In November it was announced that Bay Ferries was selected to replace the Nova Star ferry. That ship was arrested last fall when they couldn’t pay pilots or the bunkers for the vessel.
Bay Ferries used to operate a high-speed wavepiercer between Maine and Nova Scotia up until 6 years ago. Starting this summer, Bay Ferries will operate a new ship branded as The Cat. Rumors persist that she will still operate under her current name USNS Puerto Rico. This ship, owned by MARAD (United States Maritime Administration), used to sail between the Islands of Hawaii until 2009 when it ceased operations and was relocated to the East Coast. Since then she’s been sitting in Charleston, South Carolina fully laid-up. After a refit and a new coat of paint, Bay Ferries will operate her but no change in ownership. She is expected to make her first crossing form Portland to Yarmouth on June 15, 2016.
