Track the SS United States

The iconic SS United States began its final journey, leaving its dock in Philadelphia after sitting there since 1996. On Monday, February 17, Tuesday February 18, Wednesday February 19th, it will be towed down the Delaware River to Mobile, Alabama for remediation. The massive ocean liner will be maneuvered by powerful tugboats, passing under various bridges along the way. This marks a significant milestone in the ship’s long preservation efforts, with plans to remove contaminants and repurpose parts of the ship for a museum and visitor’s center in Florida. The tow will take around 14 days, with the vessel ultimately being prepared for its transformation into a reef.

The project coordinators added a GPS tracker to the aft of the vessel to allow them to track the progress. As of posting, Saturday February 15, we can see the ship shifting berths.
